Product Description
Polysorbate 80 (CAS 9005-65-6) is a nonionic surfactant produced by the reaction of sorbitol and ethylene oxide. It appears as a yellow to amber viscous liquid. It exhibits excellent emulsifying, dispersing, and solubilizing properties and is widely used in food, cosmetics, pharmaceutical preparations, agricultural adjuvants, and industrial emulsification systems. It is commonly used as an emulsifier, solubilizer, and stabilizer in pharmaceuticals and as an additive (E433) in foods.
Surfactants
Tween 20 is a surfactant, a clear, yellow or amber oily liquid with a distinctive odor and a slightly bitter taste. It is commonly used as a stabilizer in the production process or final formulation of biological products. It is produced by the reaction of sorbitan monolaurate with ethylene oxide.
Chemical Properties
Appears as an amber-colored, viscous liquid with a slight, distinctive odor and a slightly bitter taste. Relative density is 1.08-1.13, and the boiling point is 321°C. It is soluble in water, ethanol, methanol, and ethyl acetate, but insoluble in mineral oil and petroleum ether. Its HLB value is 16.7. The oral LD50 in rats is 37 g/kg, and the Ad1 is 0-25 mg/kg (FAO/WHO, 1994). Tween 20 is a nonionic surfactant.
